| 135th Annual Spring Meeting | ||||||||||||
| The
American Otological Society’s Annual Spring Meeting will be held at the
Boca Raton Resort & Club, Boca Raton, Florida, May 10-11, 2002.
Enclosed with this newsletter is the program and abstract booklets for
this meeting. Dr. Richard A. Chole and the Program Advisory Committee have planned an excellent program. The Friday Scientific Sessions will begin at 1:00 pm and continue to 5:00 pm in the Royal Palm Ballroom Salons I-V at the Boca Raton Resort with an AOS group member photograph to be taken immediately following. The Saturday Scientific Sessions will begin at 7:30 am and conclude at 12 noon also in the Royal Palm Ballroom Salons I-V. All members are encouraged to register for the Scientific Sessions. Dr. Chole received 47 abstracts for the 2002 Annual Meeting. These abstracts were sent to the Program Advisory Committee, without reference to author or institution, who rated the abstracts on a scale of 1-5, with one being the highest score. Twenty-nine abstracts were selected for the Scientific Sessions. Saturday’s Scientific Sessions will feature a panel discussion on Acoustic Neuroma Management. Dr. Richard A. Chole will serve as moderator and panelists will be Drs. Rick A. Friedman, Bruce J. Gantz, Joel A. Goebel, John K. Niparko and Phillip A. Wackym. Dr. David J. Lim. has been selected as this year’s Guest of Honor at the Annual Meeting. Dr. Lim will give a presentation on Recent Advances in Otitis Media. Dr. Michael M. Paparella will receive the Presidential Citation. |

| The
President’s Annual Reception and Dinner Dance will be held at the Boca
Raton Resort & Club on Saturday evening, May 11, 2002, and promises
to be a gala affair. The cocktail party will begin at 6:30 pm with
dinner served at 7:30 pm. The dance band will play a wide variety of
musical styles ranging from cool jazz to swing and rock and roll. So
bring your dancing shoes, your favorite partner, and dance the night
away. Tickets for the President’s Annual Reception and Dinner
Dance, for members and invited guests only, may be purchased through
the AOS Administrative Office at 2720 Tartan Way, Springfield, IL. The
cost is $125.00/person. Send check or money order payable to the
American Otological Society(Checks must be in US Dollars drawn on a US
bank). Support your Society by attending the reception, dinner and
dance. |

The
Council of the American Otological Society, Inc., met on February 2,
2002, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Council members present
included: Drs. Richard A. Chole, President, Horst R. Konrad, Sam E.
Kinney, C. Gary Jackson, Jeffrey P. Harris, John K. Niparko, Antonio De
La Cruz and incoming Secretary-Treasurer, Dr. Clough Shelton. |

| In Memoriam Recently deceased member of the Society: Dr. Jean-Bernard Causse passed away on December 13, 2001. Dr. Causse was a corresponding member of AOS. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle, and two children, Jerome and Annabelle. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Villa Anfa, L’Ardide Haute, Route de Maureihan, 34500 Beziers FRANCE. The Council extends their sympathy to the family of Dr. Causse. |

| Treasurer’s Report The balance on hand in the AOS Treasury as of February 2, 2002, was $96,269.66 Research Fund Report Dr. Jeffrey Harris reported the balance in the Research Fund as of January 14, 2002, was 8,086,995. The current yield on the portfolio is 3.12% with 57.6% in equities and 42.4% in fixed income securities. Funding for approved grants for 2002-2003 will be between $300,000 to $350,000. Of this amount $80,000 has been earmarked for the Clinician-Scientist Award. In 2001-2002 four grants were funded in the amount of $155,131. COSM 2003 The 136th Annual Meeting will be held at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, May 3-4, 2003. AOS Scientific Sessions will take place on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. The AOS Banquet will be held on Saturday evening. Transactions An order form for the 2000, Volume 88, Transactions of the American Otological Society, is enclosed. |

| AOS Membership Update The current membership totals 285: Active 133, Senior 74, Emeritus 8, Associate 44, Corresponding 16, and Honorary 10. Membership Development Committee Dr. Horst R. Konrad, chairperson of the Membership Development Committee, reported 12 new members will be inducted into the society at the 2002 Annual Meeting in Boca Raton, Florida. Ballots were sent to the Active and Senior members in November to vote on the proposed candidates. 142 ballots were returned. 10 Active Members: Drs. MoisÈs A. Arriaga, M. Need a membership form or abstract form, they are available on the website. www.americanotologicalsociety.org Call for Papers October 15, 2002, will be the deadline for submission of abstracts for the 2003 Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. All abstract submissions are to be submitted electronically via the website or e-mail. Please read all instructions carefully. Failure to comply with the instructions could delay the review of or disqualify your abstract submission. Abstracts submitted for publication, published, presented previously or considered for presentation at another national or international meeting may not be submitted. Duplicate submission to more than one COSM society will disqualify your paper. First Author accepts responsibility to secure conflict of interest/disclosure statements from all co-authors. Choose an appropriate title, as this title will appear in all publications if chosen for presentation. No changes to abstract will be accepted after 10/15/02. Abstracts are received with the understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by another publication and that they are original contributions that have not been previously published. Accepted abstracts become the permanent property of Otology & Neurotology and may not be published elsewhere without permission from Otology & Neurotology.
