132nd Annual Spring Meeting
The President’s Annual Reception and Dinner Dance will be held at the Marriott in Palm Desert on Saturday evening, April 24, 1999, and promises to be a gala affair with excellent food and dancing to the sounds of the New Sensations. The cocktail party will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the Springs Patio and dinner will follow at 7:30 p.m. in Salon G. The New Sensations dance band is one of the most popular and versatile groups in Southern California. Their wide variety of musical styles ranges from cool jazz to rock and roll, from Beach Boys to Motown, from the be bop of the 50’s to the best disco and dance music of the 70’s and 80’s. They can swing with the sounds of the 40’s, or the soft jazz of the 90’s. Put on your dancing shoes, bring your favorite partner, and dance the night away.
The American Otological Society, Inc., Annual Spring Meeting will be held at the Marriott’s Desert Springs Resort, Palm Desert, California, April 24-25, 1999. Enclosed with this newsletter is the program and abstract booklet for this meeting.
All members are encouraged to register for the Scientific Sessions. These will be held on Saturday, April 24, 7:30 a.m. - 12 noon in Salon G at the Marriott with an AOS group member photograph to be taken immediately following. The Sunday Scientific Sessions will begin at 1 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. in Salon G. Dr. Gregory J. Matz and the Program Advisory Committee have planned an excellent program.

AOS Council Update
The Council of the American Otological Society, Inc., met on February 6, 1999, in Marco Island, Florida. The Council members present included: Drs. Gregory J. Matz, President, C. Gary Jackson, Horst R. Konrad, Julianna Gulya, Joseph C. Farmer, Jr., Charles Luetje, Richard Chole and Sam Kinney.
Dr. Matz appointed Drs. Steve Harner, Myles Pensak, and Richard Wiet to serve on the 1999 Audit Committee. This Committee will review the financial statements and give a report at the Annual Meeting.
Dr. Matz received 51 abstracts for the 1999 Annual Meeting. These abstracts were sent blind-authored to the Program Advisory Committee who rated the abstracts on a scale of 1-5, five being the highest score. Thirty-six abstracts were selected for the Scientific Sessions.
Dr. Matz has selected Barbara Bohne, Ph.D., to be this year’s Guest of Honor at the Annual Meeting. Dr. Robert I. Kohut will receive the Presidential Citation.
Dr. Joseph C. Farmer, Jr., serves as Chairman of the Award of Merit committee and will announce the committee’s choice at the Saturday evening AOS Banquet
AOS Membership Update
The Current membership in AOS totals 261: 125 active, 68 senior, 6 emeritus, 41 associates, 11 corresponding and 10 honorary members. Included in this newsletter are six obituaries notifying you of the deaths of Drs.John Daly, Aram Glorig, Edwin A. Stuart, William K. Wright, David Myers, and George E. Shambaugh, Jr.
Ballots were sent to the Active and Senior members in November to vote on the proposed candidates for membership in the American Otological Society. Drs. Anil K. Lalwani, Samuel C. Levine, Michael J. McKenna, William H. Moretz, Frank Rizer, and Samuel H. Selesnick will be inducted into Active Membership. Drs. Charles G. Wright and Sabina R. Wullstein will be inducted into Associate Membership. Drs. Bernard Fraysee and Lars Odkvist will be inducted into Corresponding Membership at the Annual Meeting.
The following members have requested to be transferred to senior status: Drs. Kedar Adour, Roger Boles, Abraham Eviatar, and William H. Lippy. Dr. Anthony J. Maniglia has requested to be transferred to Emeritus status.
Once again, the Council is asking the Active and Senior members to search out good eligible candidates for active membership in the Society. A membership proposal form is enclosed with this newsletter. The proposal form for all candidates must be fully completed, signed and accompanied by the proposal letters, and submitted to the Secretary’s Office by September 1, 1999.

Membership Development Committee
At the Midwinter Council Meeting in February, the Council established an ad hoc committee entitled Membership Development. This committee will be chaired by the President-elect with committee members appointed by the President representing western, middle and eastern distribution. The committee will identify key young people in those areas and establish a mechanism by which they will be proposed to the society, if they are, in fact, qualified candidates.

Treasurer’s Report
The balance on hand in the AOS Treasury as of January 31, 1998, was $112,822.39. At the end of September the Research Fund had reached a new quarterly high of $8,721,545. This represented a 12% increase from 9/30/98. The current asset mix is primarily in equities and fixed income securities - 65/35 ratio.
Call for Papers
September 1, 1999, will be the deadline for submission of abstracts for the year 2000 Annual Meeting to be held in Orlando, Florida. An abstract form is included in this letter.

Items of Interest
The Transactions for 1997, Vol. 85, are available for distribution. An order form is enclosed with this newsletter. The Council expressed the need for Dr. Gulya to continue to work with Lippincott-Raven to keep the cost down for printing Transactions.
The Council reviewed the minutes from the Joint Committee Meeting between ASHA and AAO-HNS held in Rockville, MD. Dr. John Niparko attended this meeting on behalf of the American Otological Society. A number of major issues were discussed regarding vestibular assessment by occupational therapists, scope of practice of audiology, newborn hearing screening, supervision of speech-language pathologists and audiologists by physicians. The Council will continue to transmit to the President of the Academy that AOS wants to be involved in the discussions.
Dr. Matz reported on the activities of the American College of Surgeons. Domestic Fellows dues remain at $375.00 for 1999. A membership directory was published last month on the World Wide Web and includes names of dues paying Fellows along with phone numbers and e-mail addresses.
Dr. Kevin Robbins of Memphis, Tennessee, has been chosen to serve as the 1999 Presenter for "What’s New in Surgery." The American College of Surgeons Journal is going to be expanded and plans are to highlight a specialty in each issue. There is hope to get some articles published about smokeless tobacco, salivary gland disease, and sinus endoscopic surgery.
The College continues to spend a lot of time on coding for HCFA. Dr. Charles Mabry is now chairing a committee to do CPT relative work value changes. The ACS coding hot line phone number is 800/ACS-7911. However, they do charge for this service.

COSM 2002
The tentative schedule for COSM 2002 to be held in Boca Raton, Florida, is included with this newsletter. This is the proposed five day schedule.
